Were the fuzzy kids in the background, with your eyes more or less aimed at them, part of a plan? That might just be brilliant. Who sees their kids in sharp focus anyway?
Sorry if I offended you. My memory of that story may not be that good. I thought that age and wear and tear made the inanimate doll's inner beauty come out, to really come to life. And besides, from a scientific point of view, lots of genetic things take years if not a lifetime to manifest themselves.
